Week 24 Summary

Good news and bad news. First, the good news: The 1949 replay has completed as expected. There were no real surprises during the final week of the season and World Series play between Boston (AL) and St. Louis (NL) will commence in a few days. 1949 Boston Red Sox Bad news: I lost about 2/3's of my files and notes (pages) from my OneNote 1949 Replay folder (section). I tried a few tricks to see if there was a way to restore them, but I am thinking they are lost. Good News: The BBW 1949 season itself was backed up and safe and the BBW files themselves not affected. Hence, I will include the normal stat files below that I have been providing with the completion of every week. Bad news: One of the lost files was the weekly results file for Week 24 where I captured notes from every game. It's gone, and while I suppose I could recreate it from the BBW files I do have, suffice it to say, the season is over and I am moving on to wrapping it up. Actually, the posted blog

Week 23 Summary

Week 23 is in the books and the end of the season is coming up quick. Boston (AL) clinched a week-and-a-half ago and St. Louis (NL) clinched this past Monday, so we are that point in the season where veterans are released or benched to allow the youngbloods to show their skills while both groups are hoping to be on an ML roster in 1950. Some teams have only three games remaining, some have six, and most are somewhere in between. There are only 35 total games left to be played, including ten games on the season-ending doubleheader Sunday. That means the days between now and then are pretty light. Given that I am so close, I am going to skip the normal summary that I have done for the previous 22 weeks and instead I am going to just jump right into Week 24 and start finishing off the final week. Monday, September 19, 1949 Cleveland 4 New York (AL) (H) 2 New York led 2-1 after the fourth, but Cleveland tied it in the eighth and then pushed across two runs in the ninth to secure the win. Mickey Vernon doubled home the tying run in the ninth and Jim Hegan singled home the eventual game-winner in the ninth. Philadelphia (AL) (H) 4 St. Louis (AL) 1 St. Louis scored once in the top of the first but then Dick Fowler (9-16) got busy and shut the Browns out the rest of the way and picked up the win. Eddie Joost drove in two runs with a homerun and a sacrifice fly to lead the A's offense. Brooklyn 4 Chicago (NL) (H) 3 Rex Barney Brooklyn led 3-0 after the second, but in the third Hank Sauer (#30, 88) and Phil Cavarretta (#9, 53) hit back-to-back homeruns to tie the score at 3-3. Brooklyn immediately responded with one in the fourth, and then the pitchers took over. Rex Barney (11-9) had some help from the Dodgers bullpen but got the win over Bob

Week 22 Summary

Week 22 is in the books and only two weeks remain in the regular season. Boston (AL) clinched their spot in the World Series this past Wednesday and St. Louis (NL) currently has a magic number of one so it won’t be much longer. New York (AL) has thirteen games remaining in the final fourteen days while Detroit is at the other extreme with only eight games remaining. Teams are continuing to finish up their season series against opponents and teams are activating their late-season call-ups. There are also players that have played their last game in 1949 to make room for the callups, and in some cases, played their last ML game. St. Louis is currently on a seven-game winning streak as they look to clinch the NL pennant. Brooklyn lost yesterday but had six-game winning streak until then otherwise St. Louis would have clinched already. The rest of the standings appear to be locked into place, with the exception being the Chicago and Cincinnati duel for seventh place. Chicago currentl

Week 22 Results (09/12/1949 - 09/18/1949)

Monday, September 12, 1949 It's a travel day today and there are no games scheduled. The AL eastern teams are heading westward and the NL Midwest teams are taking trains to the east. This rotation will conclude in less than two full weeks as teams will be finishing up their series against teams from distant places, only to come home afterward and spend the last week-plus finishing the season with games against their regional opponents.    Tuesday, September 13, 1949 Detroit 7 Boston (AL) (H) 5 (11) Ted Williams hit homeruns in his first two at-bats (#51, 167) but Detroit stayed close and after some lead swaps, the game moved into extra innings. Vic Wertz hit a two-run homerun (#20, 110) in the top of the eleventh to put Detroit ahead to stay. Chicago (AL) 9 Washington (H) 2 Both teams scored once in the second but then Chicago scored four times in the third and went on to win easily over beleaguered Washington. Randy Gumpert (13-11) went all the way f
